Do you need a new mattress?

With so many options when it comes to choosing a new mattress, it can be overwhelming.

So how do you know if it’s the right one for you?

Read more about this process below.

Most high-quality beds have a lifespan of about 8-10 years. See the graph below.

Signs that you might be due to replace your bed can include:

– Sagging or rolling in the middle

– Flipping or rotating it doesn’t improve the feeling of it

– Feeling the springs when you lay on it

– Having the mattress over 12 years (From a hygiene perspective)

– You feel sore after sleep

– You cannot get comfortable on it

What are the important factors when choosing a mattress?

There are three important factors when choosing one are:

  1. material
  2. Spinal support and types
  3. Cost

Material:

memory foam

– popular choice

– adapts to your body

– suitable for people with back pain

– dense feel and energy absorption

– On the downside, due to the nature of the foam, you can sink into the mattress and sleep hot.

latex

– popular products that are frequently used

– natural resilience and elasticity (durability)

– natural latex comes from rubber trees (more sustainably produced and a great green choice)

– much cooler than memory foam counterparts.

coil and spring

– less popular now as more modern options are available, although my preferred option

– coils allow for good air circulation, allowing you to sleep cool as latex.

– conforms to the contours of your body in a similar fashion to memory foam, but without the sticky feel.

– newer systems come with either 3 to 5 body zones with different spring tension levels for comfort

pillow top

– A combination of a base material (either latex, memory foam or feather) and a soft, fluffy overlay sewn on top of it. For those who like the soft feel of a mattress but still need the support of a high-quality mattress.

Spinal Support & Type of mattress:

Spinal support means the spine is resting in a neutral or natural position whilst sleeping, so that there is no extra strain on the spine.

Secondly, it is good to check for low levels of partner disturbance., ensuring there is low mattress movement when the other person is moving around.

Most mattresses should be in the range of medium to firm to achieve spinal support. Soft mattresses can feel excellent for a night or two but are not a long-lasting solution.

Cost:

A major myth about mattresses is that the more you spend, the better it is! This is untrue. Some mattresses are cheap and uncomfortable, while others can cost up to $30,000.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to buy a quality mattress.

Australian quality, supportive and durable mattresses range in price from $800 to $3,000 depending on your needs.

How can I take care of my mattress to make it last longer?

There are several ways to extend the life of your mattress or make it last about 8-10 years.

– Use mattress protectors and wash bed linen regularly

– Rotate or rotate the mattress regularly.

– Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
